Infertility affects about 10 percent (6.1 million) of women in the United States. Therefore, many couples have started looking into alternatives routes to build their family. Some couples look into egg donation, sperm donation, IVF treatments, surrogacy, and many more. Each option is beneficial for different types of infertility. Here are a few reasons why some choose to have a baby via surrogacy:
Unable to get pregnant: If a woman has an illness that prevents her from getting pregnant or carrying the fetus full term, she may want to look into having another woman carry her baby full term for her. A woman may also want to look into surrogacy if she’s already had a hysterectomy.
Medication: Some women may have an illness that requires specific medications that could harm the growing fetus. If you need these medications for your own health and safety, it may be best to look into having a baby through surrogacy.
Age: After women reach a certain age, their eggs are no longer as fertile and healthy as they once were. If your doctor informs you that you may not be able to carry a fetus full term due to your age, you may want to look into having a younger woman carry your fetus full term for you.
Same-sex couples: Unfortunately, same-sex couples cannot have children of their own without help. Two women may be able to have a child via sperm donation. However, two men cannot have a child of their own without surrogacy or adoption.
Unexplained infertility: Sometimes doctors can’t find a cause for one’s infertility, even after months of testing. If a couple has undergone 3 to 4 IVF treatments without success, it may be time to look into alternative options, like surrogacy.
